Staying safe around a pool

Here are a few things to keep in mind when swimming this summer …

Practical life-saving skills

  • Teach your children how to swim at an early age
  • Learn how to perform CPR and understand basic life-saving skills, equipping you with the knowledge to respond to a poolside emergency.

Stay close and be alert

  • Always monitor your children while they are swimming
  • Enforce rules and safety procedures with your children, like no diving or running around the pool, staying away from open drain covers and pipes, and knowing emergency numbers by heart
  • If a child is missing, always look by the pool first

Have the necessary equipment

  • If you have young children, install a fence around your pool with a self-closing, self-locking gate
  • Make sure your pool cover/pool net is always in good working order
  • Consider installing an alarm to alert you whenever the pool gate is opened without adult supervision

For emergency situations, be sure to keep these numbers on hand:
